Everyone has heard the term ‘You are What You Eat’ right?
Well to a large extent that is true but I would like to add to that even more by saying You are What you Eat and What you Think!
Nourishing yourself with high quality food at a Mind Body and Soul level is so important as it allows you the opportunity to learn from your Body AND from your Food choices.
Setting the scene for your mind to stay Calm, Relaxed and Connected is equally important.
Many of us never learned how to form this connection with ourselves or our food, instead we learned at an early age what it was like to use food as a way of ignoring how we felt and as a way of pushing our emotions down. (More on that at a later date)
In this post I wanted to touch on ‘How Important’ it is to create a calm and relaxed environment where this special connection can take place.
First off let me explain what I mean.
How many times are we able to sit down at the table and take the time to smell, taste, sense, feel and dine, enjoying every moment of our meals.
It is probably quite safe to say that many of us instead are stuck in a pattern of habitual rush, stuffing food down while juggling, thinking about what we should be doing next or worse….
Eating our food while in a numb disconnected dead state.
Did you know that on average people only chew their food four times before swallowing it?
That’s a tad concerning when you think our stomachs don’t come with a set of teeth.
I mean when you are consuming soft fruits or pureed veges 3 – 10 times is okay, but how about a large piece of steak?
Put it to the test, try it for yourself, become aware the next time you sit down to your meal.
Take a peak at the others you are sharing a meal with just to see how common this is, NEVER to compare.
How MANY times do you chew each mouthful before you swallow it down?
We barely give ourselves time to taste and feel the texture yet our very digestion begins in the mouth.
Many people never even sit at a table preferring instead to eat off their laps while catching the latest news update on the television screen.
I know that this was our way of eating Dinner when I was growing up.
I’m going to share with you some very ‘Important information,’ if you haven’t picked up on this already.
This is just one of the ways Digestion can become impaired. AND…
It’s directly related to the environment that we choose or we are in the habit of eating our meals in.
I’m going to take a round about way but you will quickly see where I’m coming from.
Everyone knows that our noses are directly linked to our digestive systems don’t they,.
Just thinking of those smells linked to our favorite foods when we walk down the street or into a house with those beautiful aroma’s of freshly baked breads, soups and yummy stews.
And ….So are your eyes, right?
Think of when you were last glancing through a magazine and you spotted a picture displaying a delicious Feast.
Straight away your taste buds get tantalized and your stomach wakes up to tell you it’s Dinner or Snack time.
Yet did you know that through our Noses and in particular our Eyes that the Fight or Flight response can be Triggered within seconds…. Leaving us like we are literally running from a Tiger inside!
That’s right, this is what happens every time we choose to sit down and watch the News while we Eat our Dinner in plane sight.
You see ‘Our Eyes’ are directly linked to our digestive system through our nervous system, and what that means is, anything that our Eye’s see as a perceived threat to another’s safety and security, or..
There is a Trigger to negative Emotion,
For example: violence, suffering, trauma, fighting, horror, our brain immediately recognizes this as a direct threat.
Perceived threats to anyone or anything have the same outcome to us, like we are right there where the event is occurring.
Your stomach goes into somersaults.
End result, our digestive system is shut down while blood and nutrients are pumped away from the stomach to the working muscles of the legs and arms ready to fight or take flight.
This is one very good reason alone to Nurture and Grow a positive experience between You, your Body and the Environment you choose at meal times.
Small Changes can have the Biggest results.
Tips:
* Love your Body – want what is best for it.
* Choose a quiet and relaxing place where ever possible, to cultivate ‘Calm’ for your meal times.
* Light a nice candle or put on some relaxing music, clear your table of clutter and Enjoy!
* Become aware of how you are feeling in your Body. Does your Mind feel relaxed?
* Notice any stress, tension or anxiety that you may be bringing to the table with you.
* Take 3 nice slow deeps breaths before you start eating just becoming aware of your Food.
* Smell, Taste, Feel. Have Gratitude and let your food linger in your mouth.
* Chew each mouthful slowly for soft foods 3 – 10 time for heavier foods up to 30 times.
* Let your food become like saliva in your mouth.
* Question: Do you actually like the food you are eating. ‘Become aware!’
* Allow yourself at least 20 minutes to finish your meal.
Chewing your food slowly in a clam and relaxed setting while allowing yourself time without pressure will help you to become more connected to your own Body to what Foods you like and most importantly
‘To how you Feel.’
Look after Your Body and your digestion and Your Body will look after YOU!
