Did you know that 182,000 Americans died prematurely from their beliefs and thoughts about STRESS! You got it folks, there has been an actual study confirming this. These folks died purely from their thoughts and beliefs that stress is bad for you.
Kelly McGonigal, TED talk, gives an amazing take on this, I really recommend you have a listen to this.
I am sure you have heard of the placebo effect, where a patient is given a pill or substance and told that this said item will alleviate their condition, where in fact it is nothing short of a sugar pill, or potion, yet, low and behold, it creates the desired effect just like magic. A Cure!!
Or, the No-cebo effect!! When someone is given the news that they have an incurable disease and they have only a certain amount of time to live and they actually pass over before, or at that exact time…
Imagine the STRESS!…………..Terrible…………..How do you think this happens?
This is fact! There are numerous studies that confirm that high amounts of stress affect mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health and you run the very real risk of premature death, and like I said, “this is important”! it’s not from the Stress, its from your perceived thoughts and beliefs that Stress is a killer and its bad for your health!
So, are You Running from a Saber Tooth Tiger?
Recently I learned that one of the necessary steps to take in order to become a highly successful, was to have “Completion,” not just in one area of my life, but every area of my life and man did that put me into a tail spin. that meant past relationships, anything started and not completed, promises not kept, closet overflowing and clothing never worn, disorganized garage, untidy car, cheque books unbalanced, junk drawers full of unusable items, incomplete car maintenance, filling left undone, computer files not backed up, family photo’s not in albums, mending, ironing or other piles of items to repair or discard and the list can go on forever……………My mind was literally doing cart wheels, thinking of all the area’s that I needed to adopt this principle or looking for the reasons why I hadn’t adopted it yet…You got it! ….I heard it and totally decided for some reason to add STRESS to it! This folks does not make for a great recipe, as you will be well aware of by now.
What I realised, was just how easy it is, to allow ourselves to feel this stress and overwhelm and get triggered by what we believe is right..a similar feeling to pulling our own hair out wouldn’t you agree?
It lead me to thinking of ways to catch myself before going into this tailspin, or better yet, what could I do once I recognised, I’m in one!
Because do you know what, if we can catch ourselves before we go off on a tangent down that same old path that we have been blindly following out of habit, we can create a “change” then we can make a “choice”.
A conscious choice to make a change – and by doing that, we stop that Saber Tooth Tiger right in its tracks, then little by little, each time we do this, we get to save our own life! Phew!
Our thoughts aren’t really true you know — they are just apart of our stories of how we have learned to view the world, based on all our past experiences and our current beliefs. Our thoughts and beliefs filter our perceptions of reality…
Bruce Lipton gave a brilliant example of how our beliefs are formed at the age of the child through our various teachers. In this case he used the mothers of 2 young girls. He tells the story of how two mothers go walking on separate occasions with their small daughters and whilst out walking they both come across a snake on their path. The first mother screams and quickly pulls her child away, going into a blind panic, which causes her young daughter to be terrified from that day onwards of snakes. She has formed a belief that snakes are terrifying and dangerous and the stress response of fear is locked in at a young age, to react again if ever she is around snakes.
The second mother is a herpetologist (someone who studies reptiles) and comes across this snake with a total love and wonder for the colours, the age, the beauty of this snake and pulls her daughter into this beauty and wonderment, giving this child a totally different perspective of this experience.
Can you see the difference in the ways that out thoughts and beliefs are capable of expressing themselves through our reactions being either stress and danger or calm and natural?
Both children learned from a very young age the bodies way to respond and react. These reactions become the stimulus to how we react throughout our adult lives to all kinds of stress-ors!
Stress shows up in our lives in many ways and I would just like to invite you to look at the idea that stress is accumulative.
That means if you have stress in your relationships, your finances, your health, your spiritual beliefs, your physical body, EMF stressors, your food, your work place, your home, your thoughts……..it all adds together! like a big soup!!!
So! What are some of your habitual ways of responding or reacting to some of your stress ors?
You may remember a time in the past when you were in debt and the accounts just kept piling up for example, and now, every time that you go to the mailbox to pick up your mail, you have a sense of panic or anxiety, or maybe you get anxious about checking your bank balance.
Maybe you received bad news that left you really upset or angry over the telephone, just notice now, what you feel when it comes to answering the phone, even your thoughts about being on the telephone…
These are just a couple of ways that we go into stress mode. In fact there are many many ways we do this on a daily basis, thoughts around money and finances our safety and security are particularly stressing and triggering.
In today’s society it is not uncommon to be running from that proverbial tiger all day long and into the night as well…who doesn’t from time to time wake in the middle of the night with that feeling of panic or anxiety…..this is the stress response!
You are not alone in this….
So the next time folks, that you are afraid to look into that bank account, or you find yourself anxiously putting another account on the top of that pile of unopened bills, you hear the phone ringing, or you nervously walk out to the mailbox to collect your mail, STOP IT!
I invite you to STOP IT! and take a nice deep breath in, slow you breathing down. Breath in through your nose, hold for a 3 second count at the top and release through pursed lips letting the tension drain out of your body, Rinse & Repeat! at least 3 times.
You will start to feel a little calmer….now, ask yourself…..I wonder what happened to make me feel or react this way? That’s really interesting! ……
You have just created a pause…a change….a break in your patterns and doing that, you have created a chance to have a whole new outcome in every cell of your being..That’s Magic!
Less stress = a chance for a calm, relaxed, natural & joyful Life!
